Chemsex (the use of crystal meth, GHB/GBL, and mephedrone in sexual contexts) is a significant public health focus in Ireland, particularly in Dublin. The HSE and community organizations operate on a strict, non-judgmental harm reduction model.

🛡️ Harm Reduction at the Clinics

The staff at the GMHS (Gay Men's Health Service) and the MPOWER programme are highly experienced with chemsex. They are not the police. Their priority is keeping you safe from STIs, HIV, and overdose.

Honesty is clinical data. When you visit a clinic, tell them exactly what you are using. If you are using GBL/GHB, they need to factor that into your PEP/PrEP guidance. If you are slamming (injecting), they need to screen you for Hepatitis C and provide clean needles.

Needle Exchange

If you are slamming, do not reuse or share needles. Ireland has a robust network of needle exchanges. You can access free, sterile injecting equipment anonymously at many pharmacies and addiction services across the country.

🤝 Primary Support Hubs

If you want to manage your use, reduce harm, or stop entirely, specialized LGBTQ+ support is available.

⚠️ GHB/GBL Dependency

G is physically addictive. If you have been dosing around the clock (24/7) for more than a few weeks, do not stop cold turkey.

Sudden withdrawal from heavy GHB/GBL dependency is a medical emergency that can cause severe delirium, seizures, and death. Do not try to detox alone in your apartment. Present to a hospital A&E (Emergency Department) and state clearly that you are dependent on GHB/GBL and require a medical detox.
