Greece's sexual health testing culture relies primarily on community-based rapid testing centers and private clinical laboratories. There is no state-funded postal testing service, and pharmacy self-tests are harder to find than in some countries — but accessible routes do exist.
📦 Postal Testing
Greece does not offer a public, state-funded postal STI testing service. If you want to test without visiting a clinic, you must use private services.
Several private diagnostic centers and laboratories (such as Diagnostiki Athinon) offer "home collection" services: you purchase a PCR panel online, the kit is delivered via courier, you collect your sample (swab or urine), and a courier retrieves it back to the lab for analysis.
The most practical and cost-effective alternative is Checkpoint in Athens or Thessaloniki — dedicated, stigma-free sexual health centers offering free, confidential rapid testing for HIV, Hepatitis B/C, and syphilis, with results in under 20 minutes.
Symptomatic? Go to a clinic. Postal kits are for asymptomatic screening only. If you have active symptoms, contact Checkpoint or a private clinic directly.
🩸 The Finger-Prick Reality
The blood collection is where most people struggle. Squeezing thick drops of blood into a tiny tube or onto a card can be frustrating and messy.
How to succeed at the finger-prick test:
- Hydrate: Drink two massive glasses of water 30 minutes before you start. Thick blood won't flow.
- Heat: Do 20 jumping jacks to get your heart rate up, then wash your hands in hot water for 3 minutes. Your veins need to be warm and dilated.
- Gravity: Stand up to do the test. Keep your hand pointing down, below your heart level.
- The Pierce: Use the side of your ring finger, not the sensitive center pad. Press the lancet firmly into the skin before clicking the release button.
💊 Pharmacy HIV Self-Tests
Unlike many EU countries, HIV self-tests are not widely available over the counter in Greek pharmacies.
- Availability: Rare in local pharmacies — order from online medical suppliers or international pharmacies that ship to Greece.
- Cost: Around €15 to €30 plus shipping.
Note that private microbiology labs offer standard blood draws for HIV screening for as low as €15, which is often faster and more reliable than waiting for an online test to be delivered.
