Wales has its own NHS — NHS Wales (GIG Cymru) — controlled by the Welsh Government, not NHS England. The sexual health firewall, the principle of free care at the point of use, and the non-judgmental GUM clinic model all apply equally here. For those fundamentals, see UK: The GUM Clinic & The Firewall.

What differs is the service infrastructure: the home testing system is different, PrEP access routes differ, and LGBTQ+ sexual health navigation runs through Welsh-specific networks. A Welsh resident who follows England's guidance will frequently be directed to the wrong service.

🐉 Fast Track Cymru

Fast Track Cymru is Wales's premier HIV prevention and care network. In July 2025, Wales became the first country in the world to be recognised as a "Fast Track Nation" — meeting the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets at a national level.

Hosted by Pride Cymru, the initiative operates across a growing network of regions, including Cardiff & Vale, Gwent (Aneurin Bevan), Swansea Bay, North Wales (Betsi Cadwaladr), and Cwm Taf Morgannwg.

For gay and bi men, Fast Track Cymru is a vital navigation resource. They can connect you with testing, PrEP access, and LGBTQ+-affirming care if you are unsure where to start. Find them at fasttrack.wales.

🗣️ THT Cymru & The Welsh Language

Terrence Higgins Trust Cymru operates across Wales from its base in Swansea and utilises its own dedicated domain: tht.cymru. THT Cymru provides HIV testing and support, peer networks for HIV-positive men, and critical assistance in navigating HIV treatment and benefits within the Welsh system.

Under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011, NHS Wales bodies have a legal duty to provide services in Welsh on equal terms with English. This means you can request your sexual health appointment, clinical consultation, and written correspondence in Welsh. State your preference when booking.

💬 Anonymous Partner Notification

If you test positive for an STI, you can notify your partners completely anonymously. You do not need to face a difficult conversation if you feel unsafe or anxious.

  • Clinic Health Advisers: Your LHB clinic can manage contact tracing for you. You can give them your partners' phone numbers, and they will text them anonymously to say they have been exposed to an STI and should get tested. They will never reveal your identity.
  • shwales.online: The postal testing portal has built-in anonymous notification tools.
  • Let Them Know: A free online service (letthemknow.org.uk) allows you to send anonymous texts or emails.
