The further you are from Glasgow or Edinburgh, the more navigation is required. Sexual healthcare is managed by regional Health Boards, and in rural areas, capacity is often constrained.

Aberdeen & The North East

NHS Grampian's sexual health service covers the North East. The main clinic is located at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. PrEP is available via self-referral to this clinic. It operates a mix of drop-in triage and booked appointments.

Dundee & Tayside

NHS Tayside runs its primary sexual health clinic out of Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. PrEP, HIV care, and full GUM services are available here.

Inverness & The Highlands

NHS Highland covers a massive geographic area. The Raigmore Hospital sexual health service in Inverness is the main hub, but provision thins out significantly in rural areas.

  • Testing: Home testing via the postal system is the most practical route for routine asymptomatic screening.
  • PrEP: Expect to travel to Inverness or use the private IWPN import route while waiting for an NHS Highland appointment.

The Islands

For residents of Orkney, Shetland, and the Western Isles:

  • Testing: Postal home testing is the primary and most realistic route for routine screening.
  • PrEP & HIV Care: Speak to your local GP as the first port of call. They can coordinate with the nearest mainland HIV specialist or refer you appropriately.
