Mental health and sexual health are deeply connected. France has a universal public mental health system, but it is heavily bureaucratic and culturally competent LGBTQ+ care can be difficult to find outside of major urban centers like Paris.
🚨 Immediate Crisis Support
If you are in immediate physical danger or experiencing a medical emergency, call 15 (SAMU/Medical) or 112.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis but are safe:
| Service | Contact | Details |

🛋️ Therapy Options
The Public Route (CMP)
The French state provides free psychiatric and psychological care through CMPs (Centres Médico-Psychologiques). Every neighborhood/region is assigned to a specific CMP.
While completely free, CMPs are severely underfunded. Waitlists for a psychologist can stretch from 6 to 12 months. Furthermore, you cannot choose your therapist, meaning you cannot guarantee they will understand gay male sexual dynamics, HIV anxiety, or chemsex.
The Private Route (MonPsy)
France recently introduced the MonPsy scheme, allowing anyone to get up to 8 sessions per year with a private psychologist reimbursed by the state.
- You must get a referral (ordonnance) from your GP.
- You must choose a psychologist who is registered with the MonPsy scheme.
- The sessions are heavily subsidized.
Private LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy
If you need immediate help and want to avoid spending your first three sessions explaining what PrEP is, you will need to pay for a private therapist out of pocket (typically €60–€90 per session). Some Mutuelles (top-up insurances) will reimburse a portion of private therapy costs.
NGO Support
Because the public system is slow, NGOs fill the gap for sexual health-related anxiety:
- AIDES: Offers excellent peer support and counseling regarding HIV diagnosis, chemsex, and sexual anxiety.
- Le Kiosque Infos Sida: Offers free psychological support sessions in Paris.
