Mental health and sexual health are deeply intertwined. Navigating gay relationships, chemsex recovery, or HIV anxiety requires support that understands the cultural context. Finland has universal public mental health provision, but navigating it—and finding culturally competent therapists—requires knowing the system.

🚨 Immediate Crisis Support

If you are in immediate danger, call 112. If you are spiraling but physically safe, use the crisis lines.

🛋️ Accessing Therapy

The Public Route (Kela-Reimbursed Psychotherapy)

Finland has a unique system where the state (Kela) will subsidize long-term private psychotherapy if your mental health is threatening your ability to work or study.

  1. The Diagnosis: You must first get a diagnosis (e.g., depression, anxiety) from a psychiatrist in the public system (via your terveysasema or student health).
  2. The Wait: You must undergo at least three months of psychiatric evaluation/treatment before Kela will approve the subsidy.
  3. Finding a Therapist: Once approved, you find a private therapist (Kela maintains a register). Kela covers a significant portion of the cost for up to 3 years.

Kela does not assign you a therapist. You have to interview and find one yourself who has available slots. Finding an explicitly LGBTQ+-competent therapist can take time. Use Seta ry's resources or network to find recommended professionals.

NGO Support

For specialized, shorter-term support that doesn't require a psychiatric diagnosis:

  • Hivpoint: Offers excellent psychosocial counseling specifically dealing with sexual health anxiety, HIV diagnosis, and chemsex.
  • Positiiviset ry: The primary support organization for people living with HIV in Finland, offering peer support and counseling.
