DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is a single 200mg dose of the antibiotic doxycycline taken within 72 hours of condomless sex. It is highly effective at preventing syphilis and chlamydia, but its use is controversial among European health authorities due to fears of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

🏥 Availability in the Public System

Unlike some European countries where DoxyPEP is strictly forbidden on the public health system, Finland has adopted a pragmatic, harm-reduction approach—though access is highly gatekept.

You cannot get DoxyPEP at a standard health station (terveysasema). It is strictly managed by specialists.

DoxyPEP is available through the specialist sukupuolitautien poliklinikka (venereal diseases outpatient clinics), but it is not handed out automatically. It is typically prescribed only to gay and bisexual men who have a documented history of recurrent syphilis or chlamydia infections.

If you meet this clinical profile, the specialist doctor may prescribe you a supply to use "on-demand" after high-risk encounters.

🤝 The NGO Route (Hivpoint)

If you believe you are a candidate for DoxyPEP but are unsure how to navigate the hospital bureaucracy, Hivpoint can act as an intermediary. While Hivpoint cannot prescribe the medication themselves, their nurses can assess your risk profile and provide a direct referral to the correct specialist clinic, ensuring your request is taken seriously.

💶 Cost and Reality

If prescribed via the public system, the cost is minimal. Doxycycline is a cheap, generic antibiotic. You will pay a standard Kela-subsidized pharmacy fee, typically between €5 and €12 for a full course of pills to keep on hand.

Do not attempt to source DoxyPEP through online "acne" prescriptions unless you explicitly understand the dosing. Acne prescriptions provide 50mg or 100mg pills. DoxyPEP requires a 200mg dose. Taking a smaller dose will not protect you from syphilis and actively contributes to antibiotic resistance.
