Chemsex (the use of crystal meth, GHB/GBL, and mephedrone in sexual contexts) is less visible in Finland than in Berlin or London, but the scene exists, primarily in Helsinki. Finland's approach to drug use leans heavily toward practical, non-judgmental harm reduction.

🛡️ The Harm Reduction Approach

The public health system and NGOs in Finland operate to keep you safe, not to police you. If you are using chems, you can and should be honest with your sexual health doctors.

Be entirely honest with the staff at Hivpoint or the sukupuolitautien poliklinikka about your drug use. They need to know if you are using GHB/GBL to calibrate your PEP/PrEP advice, and they need to know if you are injecting to provide you with the correct safety resources.

Needle Exchange (Terveysneuvonta)

If you are slamming (injecting), Finland has an excellent network of health counseling centers (terveysneuvontapisteet). You can walk in anonymously to exchange used needles for clean ones, get sterile water, filters, and swabs for free. They operate in all major cities.

🏛️ Where to Get Support

If you want to manage your use, reduce harm, or stop entirely, these are the primary services:

OrganizationBest ForLink
HivpointChemsex-specific counseling tailored specifically for gay/bi men.hivpoint.fi
A-KlinikkaMedical support for severe dependency, including supervised detox.a-klinikka.fi
EHYT ryGeneral substance abuse counseling and support groups.ehyt.fi

⚠️ GHB/GBL Dependency

G is physically addictive. If you have been dosing around the clock (even waking up to dose so you can sleep) for more than a few weeks, do not stop cold turkey.

Sudden withdrawal from heavy GHB/GBL dependency is a medical emergency that can cause severe delirium, seizures, and death. Do not try to detox at home. Present to a hospital emergency department (päivystys) or an A-Klinikka and state clearly that you are dependent on GBL/GHB and require a medical detox.
