Barcelona has arguably the most famous community-led sexual health center in Europe: BCN Checkpoint. Navigating gay sexual health in Catalonia effectively means navigating through them.
🏛️ The NGO Entry Point
BCN Checkpoint (run by Projecte dels NOMS-Hispanosida) is a peer-led community center located in the Eixample district. It is designed by and for gay men, bisexual men, and trans women.
- Highly Competent: They are heavily involved in European clinical trials and often have access to treatments and testing technologies before the main public hospitals do.
- Culturally Fluent: No judgment, no awkward explanations of chemsex or open relationships.
- The Fast Track: They are deeply integrated with the Catalan health system (CatSalut) and the major hospitals (Hospital Clínic, Vall d'Hebron).
- Demand: Because they are so good, booking an appointment can be difficult.
Use them as your primary hub. Go to BCN Checkpoint for your routine rapid HIV/Syphilis tests, STI swabs, and initial PrEP consultations. If you need complex hospital care or official PrEP dispensing, they will handle the referral directly into the hospital system (usually Drassanes-Vall d'Hebron or Hospital Clínic).

If BCN Checkpoint is the front door, the hospitals are the engine room.

🚨 Emergency PEP in Barcelona
If you have a condom break or high-risk exposure, you have a 72-hour window. Do not wait for a BCN Checkpoint appointment.
Go immediately to the Urgencias (Emergency Room) at Hospital Clínic. They are the absolute authority on PEP in the city. Tell the triage nurse you need PEP (Profilaxis Post-Exposición) for a sexual exposure.
