Finding LGBTQ+-affirming mental health care in Cyprus can be challenging, particularly outside of Nicosia. While the GeSY system covers clinical psychiatric care, many gay and bisexual men rely on specialized NGOs and private therapists to find counselors who understand the nuances of the community, open relationships, and chemsex without judgment.
🆘 Immediate Crisis Lines
If you are in immediate distress, experiencing a severe mental health crisis, or having suicidal thoughts, help is available 24/7.
- 112: The general emergency number (Ambulance/Police). Use this if you are in immediate physical danger or have harmed yourself.
- 1440: Domestic Violence Helpline (AIVD), available 24/7.
- 1454: KENTHEA Helpline for substance abuse and addiction crises.
🏳️🌈 LGBTQ+ Affirming Organizations
For non-emergency support, peer counseling, and referrals to gay-friendly therapists, the local community organizations are your best resource.
AIDS Solidarity Movement (ASM)
While primarily focused on sexual health and HIV, ASM provides vital psychosocial support for men dealing with new HIV diagnoses, sexual anxiety, or chemsex issues. They maintain a network of trusted, affirming private therapists to whom they can refer you.

🛋️ Accessing Therapy
The GeSY Route
If you are registered with GeSY, you can access clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. You will need a referral from your Personal Doctor.
- The catch: You do not always get to choose an LGBTQ+-specialized therapist through the public system, and waiting times can be long.
The Private Route
Many gay men in Cyprus choose to see private therapists to guarantee confidentiality and specialized care.
- Cost: Private therapy sessions typically range from €40 to €80 per hour.
- How to find one: Do not pick a therapist blindly. Contact ASM or Accept-LGBTI to ask for a list of vetted, gay-friendly psychologists in your city.
🎗️ Specific Support Needs
- Newly Diagnosed with HIV: Do not navigate this alone. The Grigorios Clinic provides medical social workers, and ASM offers specialized peer support for guys adjusting to a positive status. See the HIV Diagnosis Guide.
- Chemsex / Substance Use: If your mental health is suffering due to chemsex, specialized support is critical. Reach out to ASM or KENTHEA. See the Chemsex Support Guide.
