DoxyPEP (taking a dose of doxycycline after condomless sex to prevent bacterial STIs) is not yet an officially adopted, mainstream clinical guideline within the Cyprus public healthcare system. However, the reality on the ground is that informed patients are discussing it with their doctors.

👨‍⚕️ The Clinical Reality

Because DoxyPEP is not a formal Cypriot national guideline, you will not be routinely offered it at public clinics or by standard GeSY Personal Doctors.

To access it, you will need to find a doctor willing to prescribe it "off-label" (prescribing a medication for a use other than its officially approved indication).

Who to Talk To

  1. Specialist HIV Clinics: Doctors at the Grigorios Clinic (Larnaca) or the infectious disease unit in Nicosia are generally the most up-to-date on global sexual health protocols. If you are already a patient there (e.g., for PrEP or HIV care), they are the best clinicians to discuss DoxyPEP with.
  2. Affirming GeSY Specialists: Some private urologists or dermatologists (who handle venereology in Cyprus) may be willing to prescribe it if you present them with the international evidence, but this relies heavily on finding a progressive, LGBTQ+-friendly doctor.

What to Say

Be direct with your doctor. You can say:

"I would like to discuss using DoxyPEP to reduce my risk of bacterial STIs like syphilis and chlamydia. I am aware of the international guidelines and I would like a prescription for doxycycline to use post-exposure."

💶 Cost and Access

If a doctor agrees to prescribe it:

  • The Prescription: The doctor will write a prescription for standard Doxycycline (often sold under brand names like Vibramycin).
  • The Pharmacy: You take the prescription to any pharmacy.
  • The Cost: Because it is an off-label use for prevention, it may not be subsidized by GeSY. However, doxycycline is a very cheap generic antibiotic, typically costing only a few euros for a box.

⚠️ Important Considerations

If you are using DoxyPEP in Cyprus, you must pair it with a rigorous testing schedule.

Because routine 3-site swab testing is not available anonymously and for free in one single location (you must navigate GeSY or pay private labs), some men skip regular testing. Do not use DoxyPEP as a substitute for testing. Doxycycline does not cure gonorrhea reliably, and asymptomatic infections must still be screened for. See the GeSY Lab Testing Guide for how to get full swabs.
