If you test positive for a bacterial STI (gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis) in Bulgaria, the treatment pathway depends on where you were diagnosed.
The Treatment Pathway
- Tested at Checkpoint Sofia: Checkpoint provides testing but is not a full medical clinic that dispenses antibiotics directly. If you test positive there, they will immediately refer you to an LGBTQ+-affirming infectious disease specialist or dermatologist/venereologist in their network.
- Tested at a Private Lab or Doctor: If you receive positive results from a private lab (like Ramus or Synevo), you must take those results to a specialist doctor (often paid out-of-pocket) to get a prescription.
- Cost & Treatment: You will typically pay for the private consultation (approx. 50–100 BGN) and the medication at the pharmacy. Syphilis and gonorrhea often require injections, which the specialist will administer or arrange.
Partner Notification
Bulgaria does not currently have a centralized, public anonymous notification portal. The most effective route is to ask the clinic or doctor who diagnosed you to assist; many local sexual health units or NGOs can facilitate confidential partner notification on your behalf without revealing your identity. It's always better than silence.
