For the clinical reality of living with HIV, treatment timelines, and what U=U means biologically, see HIV in 2026: The Facts Without the Fear first. This page covers the immediate local pathway in Austria.

The Acute Diagnosis Pathway

A positive screening test at Aids Hilfe or a private doctor is always followed by a confirmatory lab test. Once confirmed, you will be rapidly connected to an HIV treatment center, most notably the Infektionsambulanz at AKH Wien (General Hospital Vienna) or a regional Landeskrankenhaus.

These specialized outpatient clinics handle your initial bloodwork, prescribe Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), and become your primary providers for HIV care.

Treatment and Costs

  • Access to ART: Treatment is initiated quickly, often within days of the confirmed diagnosis.
  • Cost: HIV medication and associated medical care are fully covered by public health insurance (ÖGK, SVS, BVAEB). You will typically only pay the standard Rezeptgebühr (prescription fee) at the pharmacy when collecting your medication.
  • U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable): The Austrian medical establishment fully recognizes U=U. Once your viral load is undetectable, you cannot pass the virus on.

In Austria, there is no blanket legal requirement to disclose your HIV status to sexual partners before sex if you are undetectable (U=U) or effectively practicing safer sex (condoms), as you are not putting them at risk of transmission. However, intentionally exposing someone to the risk of transmission without informing them can fall under criminal law (endangerment).

Peer Support

Aids Hilfe Wien (and its regional chapters in Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, etc.) is the cornerstone of peer support in Austria. They offer psychosocial counseling, support groups for newly diagnosed individuals, and social workers who can help you navigate the system.
