The Context

Chemsex exists in Slovakia's gay and bisexual men's community. Drug use is illegal in Slovakia and enforcement is not negligible — this creates real barriers to seeking help. However, healthcare providers and Dom Svetla staff are bound by professional confidentiality. Being honest with them about chemsex will not result in police involvement.

Slovakia's conservative social environment means chemsex-related support structures are less developed than in western Europe. Dom Svetla is the primary resource.

Dom Svetla staff are trained in harm reduction for gay and bisexual men and can:

  • Discuss chemsex situations confidentially
  • Provide harm reduction information
  • Help arrange STI testing after sessions
  • Refer to addiction or psychological support
  • Advise on PrEP adherence during chemsex

Harm Reduction Essentials

HIV and STI Risk

Chemsex significantly increases HIV and STI transmission risk. Test after every significant episode:

  • HIV and syphilis at Dom Svetla Checkpoint (free, Tue/Thu 16:30–19:00)
  • Full three-swab panel (výter z hrdla, rektálny výter, uretrálny výter) at a private lab
  • Keep PrEP consistent

GHB/GBL — The Overdose Risk

The most immediately dangerous chemsex drug. The gap between an effective dose and unconsciousness is narrow, and mixing with alcohol can be fatal.

If someone becomes unresponsive: call 112 immediately. Tell the paramedics what was taken. Emergency services in Slovakia respond to overdoses as medical emergencies.

Crystal Meth and Mephedrone

Extended arousal and wakefulness; severe comedown; rapid psychological dependency with regular use. Dom Svetla staff can discuss dependency concerns without judgment and refer to appropriate services.

Injecting

Never share injecting equipment. Dom Svetla can advise on current needle exchange services.

Support for Reducing or Stopping

  • Dom Svetla (+421 2 2102 8048) — first contact; non-judgmental; will refer to appropriate services
  • Inakosť (inakost.sk) — LGBTQ+ support including referrals for mental health concerns
  • OLÚP (Psychiatrická nemocnica Philippa Pinela) — Pezinok, near Bratislava; public addiction services accessed via GP referral
  • Your obvodný lekár — can refer to addiction medicine (psychiatria závislostí); confidential

PrEP During Chemsex

Daily PrEP provides protection during chemsex sessions if taken consistently. On-demand PrEP (2+1+1) requires the pre-sex doses to actually be taken, which is harder during spontaneous or extended sessions. Dom Svetla can discuss which approach makes most sense for your patterns of use.

Emergency

112 — ambulance Kramáre Hospital CPO (02 5954 1111, 24h) — for PEP after a session with potential HIV exposure
