The Short Version
CheckpointLX is the best place to test in Lisbon. It is free, anonymous, peer-run, and specifically oriented toward gay and bisexual men. You do not need a health card, an SNS number, or an appointment for walk-in rapid testing. The staff are peers and the environment is completely non-judgmental.
For a full sexual health screen, you will need to supplement CheckpointLX with a hospital or clinic visit — CheckpointLX offers rapid tests but not the complete bacterial swab panel you need for a thorough STI check.

- Rapid hepatitis C test

The Three-Site Testing Gap
CheckpointLX rapid tests cover blood-borne infections well — HIV, syphilis, hepatitis C. What they do not provide is the full bacterial swab panel that gay and bisexual men need.
A complete screen for someone who has receptive anal sex, oral sex, or both requires:
- Zaragatoa faríngea — throat swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the throat)
- Zaragatoa retal — rectal swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the rectum)
- Zaragatoa uretral — urethral swab (gonorrhoea and chlamydia in the urethra)
Throat and rectal gonorrhoea and chlamydia cause no symptoms in the majority of cases. If you only test blood and urine, you will miss the most common bacterial infections in gay and bisexual men.
For a full panel including bacterial swabs, your options are:
- Hospital outpatient clinic — Doenças Infecciosas (Infectious Diseases) or Dermatovenereologia at Curry Cabral, Santa Maria, or São José in Lisbon; free but requires scheduling
- Private laboratory — Synevo (synevo.pt), Germano de Sousa (germanodesousa.com), or similar; you pay out-of-pocket, results in 1–3 days; no referral needed; costs roughly €60–120 for a full panel
GAT staff can help you understand what you need and refer you appropriately.
GAT Move-se (Mobile Testing Unit)
GAT also runs mobile testing through its Move-se project, visiting community venues, events, and areas where gay and bisexual men may not come to a fixed clinic. Check gat.pt for current locations and schedules.
Centro de Saúde (Public Primary Care)
Your local Centro de Saúde can test for STIs under the SNS. This is free if you have an SNS utente number, but comes with limitations:
- Appointments are required and waiting times can be long
- Doctors vary in their knowledge of gay men's health — some will not routinely offer rectal or throat swabs
- Testing is not anonymous — it goes on your SNS health record
- You may need to be assertive about requesting swabs from all three sites
If you have an SNS number and a supportive Médico de Família, this route works well. If you are a tourist or want anonymity, CheckpointLX is the better starting point.
Practical Summary
For rapid HIV/syphilis/HCV: CheckpointLX — free, walk-in, anonymous For full bacterial swab panel: hospital outpatient or private lab For navigation and referrals: GAT staff at CheckpointLX will point you in the right direction
