The honest picture outside Budapest: sexual health resources for gay and bisexual men are very limited, Háttér Society is primarily Budapest-focused, and the political environment in many regional cities is more conservative than the capital. This article covers what actually exists and how to navigate it.

The Core Constraint

Everything that makes sexual health navigation workable in Budapest — Anonym AIDS, Háttér, the affirming team at Szent László — is geographically concentrated in the capital. Outside Budapest, you are largely navigating the public healthcare system without community infrastructure. This means:

  • Standard public STI clinics (Bőr- és Nemibeteggondozó) are your primary testing option
  • PEP is available at regional hospital emergency departments but may require more advocacy
  • PrEP consultation will require travelling to Budapest (or finding a private specialist willing to prescribe)
  • Háttér can provide phone/online support from anywhere in Hungary — use this resource

Debrecen

Kenézy Gyula Campuskórház Address: Bartók Béla út 2-26, Debrecen Emergency: 52 511 777

Debrecen's main hospital complex includes an infectious disease department. For PEP, go to the sürgősségi (emergency) and request the ügyeletes infektológus (on-call infectious disease specialist). Say: "HIV expozíció — PEP szükséges".

STI testing in Debrecen:

  • Bőr- és Nemibeteggondozó (public STI clinic) — present in Debrecen; requires TAJ card; attitudes vary
  • Private labs in the city offer blood panels including HIV and syphilis
  • For a full three-swab panel, you may need to advocate explicitly or visit Budapest

Community note: Debrecen is Hungary's second largest city but has a conservative political environment. The LGBTQ+ community is largely underground. Online connection and Háttér's remote support are the most reliable resources.

Pécs

Pécsi Tudományegyetem Klinikai Központ (PTE KK) Address: Ifjúság útja 13, Pécs Emergency: 72 536 000

University clinical centre with infectious disease capacity. PEP is accessible through the emergency department. Pécs, as a university city, tends to be somewhat more liberal than other Hungarian cities outside Budapest.

STI testing in Pécs:

  • The university hospital's dermatovenerology department can provide STI diagnosis with referral
  • Private labs for blood-based testing
  • Háttér may know of any affirming contacts in Pécs — check with them

Győr

Petz Aladár Egyetemi Oktató Kórház Address: Vasvári Pál utca 2-4, Győr Emergency: 96 507 900

Northwest Hungary's main hospital. Infectious disease and emergency PEP access. Győr's proximity to Austria and Slovakia means some residents travel to Vienna for more discreet sexual health services — this is a real option if privacy is a primary concern (Vienna has excellent, anonymous services).

Miskolc

Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén Megyei Központi Kórház Address: Szentpéteri kapu 72-76, Miskolc Emergency: 46 515 100

Northeast Hungary's main hospital. Infectious disease on-call available for emergencies including PEP.

Note on northeast Hungary: This is among the most conservative regions politically. The advice about selective disclosure to healthcare providers applies with particular force here. Get what you need medically, but Háttér and online community resources are more reliable for broader support.

Practical Recommendations for Non-Budapest Residents

Make Háttér your navigator even from a distance. hatter.hu — they provide phone and online counselling and have navigated the Hungarian system for many people in regional cities. They may know of affirming doctors or services near you.

Consider Budapest for PrEP initiation. The reality is that PrEP consultation and prescription requires finding a willing infektológus. The most reliable way to do this remains going to Budapest for your initial appointment at or via Szent László, then potentially managing ongoing prescriptions via a private local pharmacy with periodic Budapest check-ins.

Use private labs for blood-based testing. A private lab in most Hungarian cities can run an HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis panel without a TAJ card. Three-swab testing still requires a doctor's involvement, but for HIV surveillance at minimum, private labs work.

Travel insurance if you're visiting: If you're travelling in Hungary and have a potential exposure, know your nearest hospital (above) and head there. EU EHIC covers emergency care.

The Vienna Option

For gay and bisexual men in western Hungary (Győr, Sopron), Vienna is accessible and offers:

  • Anonymous STI testing at Aids Hilfe Wien and WIG testing centres
  • Free HIV testing
  • Access to PrEP prescription via Viennese sexual health clinics
  • A more openly welcoming healthcare environment

If you live in western Hungary and can easily reach Vienna, it may be worth exploring Austrian services for ongoing sexual health needs.
