Hungarian is a famously difficult language, but for healthcare navigation you only need a small number of phrases and terms. English is spoken by younger medical professionals in Budapest, but knowing the Hungarian terms helps with paperwork, signs, and situations where English isn't available.
The System: Key Concepts
TAJ szám / TAJ kártya — Társadalombiztosítási Azonosító Jel. Your social insurance number and card. This is how the public health system identifies you. Required for TAJ-funded services. Using it creates a record — understand this before using it for sensitive services.
NEAK — Nemzeti Egészségbiztosítási Alapkezelő — National Health Insurance Fund. The public health insurer. Replaced the older OEP. Covers most Hungarians.
EHIC — EU citizens can use their European Health Insurance Card for medically necessary care in Hungary at NEAK rates.
Háziorvos — Your assigned GP / family doctor. The first point of contact in the public system. In Hungary's current political climate, many gay and bisexual men prefer not to use their háziorvos for sexual health matters if they cannot be open. This is understandable — Háttér can refer you to affirming alternatives.
Magánrecept — Private prescription. Not linked to your TAJ number. More private.
Magánklinika — Private clinic. No TAJ required, you pay directly.
Szakorvos / Szakrendelés — Specialist / specialist outpatient clinic. For sexual health, the relevant specialist is an infektológus (infectious disease specialist) or bőrgyógyász (dermatologist/venereologist).
Bejáró beteg / Járóbeteg-ellátás — Outpatient care (walk-in or appointment-based, not admitted as inpatient).
