The Phrasebook

At the Doctor / Clinic

  • "Quiero hacerme pruebas completas de ITS." (I want full STI tests.)
  • "Necesito también exudados (faringe y recto)." (I also need swabs (throat/rectum).)
    • Critical: "Exudado" is the word for swab sample.
  • "Soy usuario de PrEP." (I am a PrEP user.)

Advocating for PrEP Access (During the Current Crisis)

  • "Quiero iniciar la PrEP. ¿Cuánto tiempo es la lista de espera?" (I want to start PrEP. How long is the waitlist?)
  • "¿Hay alguna forma de acelerar el proceso? Tengo prácticas de riesgo activas." (Is there a way to speed up the process? I have ongoing risk practices.)
  • "¿Puedo ir directamente a la consulta de enfermedades infecciosas?" (Can I go directly to the infectious diseases clinic?)
  • "Estoy en lista de espera para PrEP y necesito seguimiento mientras tanto." (I am on the PrEP waitlist and need monitoring in the meantime.)
    • Use this to ensure you are still getting tested every 3 months while waiting.
  • "¿Hay cancelaciones disponibles?" (Are there any cancellations available?)
    • Ask this every time you call. Persistence is your best tool.

Emergency (PEP)

  • "He tenido una práctica de riesgo." (I had a risk practice/incident.)
  • "Necesito profilaxis post-exposición (PPE)." (I need PEP.)
  • "¿Dónde está la farmacia de guardia?" (Where is the duty pharmacy? - for buying condoms/lube at night, though they won't have HIV meds).

At the Pharmacy

  • "¿Necesita receta?" (Does it need a prescription?)
  • "Preservativos" (Condoms).

Acronyms

  • VIH: Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (HIV).
