For the full clinical picture on each vaccine — what it covers, schedules, and the evidence — see The Vaccine Checklist. This article covers Denmark-specific access routes and eligibility.
Mpox (Monkeypox)
- Eligibility: Free for gay and bisexual men at elevated risk, particularly those on PrEP, with multiple partners, or involved in chemsex contexts.
- Vaccine: Imvanex (MVA-BN). Two doses, four weeks apart for a primary course.
- Where: Infectious Disease Departments at Hvidovre Hospital and Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen; regional infectious disease centres in Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg. Checkpoint can also facilitate access and has information on current booking availability.
- 2026 context: Following renewed mpox circulation in Europe in 2025–2026, vaccination campaigns targeting gay and bisexual men have been renewed. If you haven't completed your primary course, ask at your next Checkpoint appointment or contact your infectious disease clinic directly.
- Boosters: If you completed a primary course during the 2022 outbreak, discuss a booster with your clinician given ongoing circulation.
- Booking: Via your infectious disease clinic or through Checkpoint. Check aidsfondet.dk for current Checkpoint vaccination availability.
Hepatitis A & B
- Eligibility: Free for gay and bisexual men at Checkpoint and at public sexual health and infectious disease clinics.
- Combined vaccine: Twinrix (hepatitis A + B combined) is the standard — one vaccine covering both.
- Schedule: Three doses at 0, 1, and 6 months for full protection. An accelerated schedule (0, 7, 21 days + booster at 12 months) is available if you need rapid protection.
- Where: Checkpoint is the most accessible route — no CPR required, free, and you can often get the vaccination at the same appointment as testing. GPs can also administer hepatitis vaccines but may need to order stock.
- Why it matters: Hepatitis A is readily transmitted through sexual contact involving oro-anal exposure. Hepatitis B is both sexually transmitted and bloodborne, and can cause chronic liver disease. Both are entirely vaccine-preventable.
- Existing immunity: If you've had previous hepatitis infection or vaccination, a blood test can confirm whether you already have immunity before starting a course.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
HPV vaccines protect against strains responsible for genital warts, anal cancer, penile cancer, and throat cancer. Gardasil 9 (the current standard) covers 9 strains.
Free for:
- All children through Denmark's national immunisation programme (currently targeting boys and girls in the first year of secondary school, around age 12)
- Young people not caught by the school programme up to age 18 through catch-up: check sundhed.dk for current eligibility
HIV-positive men: The Danish Health Authority (Sundheds Styrelsen) recommends HPV vaccination for HIV-positive adults regardless of age, as immune compromise reduces natural protection. Discuss this with your HIV specialist at Hvidovre or Rigshospitalet.
If you're an adult and not HIV-positive: HPV vaccine is available privately. Gardasil 9 costs approximately 1,500–1,800 DKK per dose (three doses needed = approximately 4,500–5,400 DKK total). Available at some pharmacies, travel clinics, and private GP practices. This is significantly more expensive than in the UK, where the programme now covers adults to 45.
Where for private vaccination: Pharmacies including Matas, private GPs, and private travel health clinics. Checkpoint may have updated information on current availability.
Meningococcal Vaccines
Not routinely recommended or funded for most adults in Denmark. If you are HIV-positive, meningococcal vaccination may be recommended — ask your HIV specialist or the infectious disease team at your clinic. Available privately otherwise.
Practical Notes
- Checkpoint is your vaccination hub for hepatitis and mpox. You can often combine vaccination with a testing appointment — ask when you book.
- Hospital pharmacy vs community pharmacy: The mpox and hepatitis vaccines given at hospital clinics are dispensed by the hospital system — they do not go to a community pharmacy. Checkpoint handles the administration on-site.
- Check Sundheds Styrelsen (sst.dk): HPV catch-up eligibility criteria and vaccination recommendations do change. The SST website has current definitive guidance.
